Submit to PIG

I’ve gotten over the disappointment of discovering that PIG: a journal is not, in fact, a journal about pigs. Hey, poetry’s good too. Poetry isn’t pink and it doesn’t trot or solve complex problems, but it can be lyrical. And edifying. Write a poem about a pig and then you’ve really got something! PIG: a journal wants “some pigs poems!.”  Send ‘em by January 7 to pigajournal@gmail.com.

Cheers: Holiday-Suicide Link a Myth

How many times have we heard that maudlin canard about bittersweet holidays? So much happiness. And yet so many tears.

Turns out it’s mostly happiness after all. Lots of recent statistical studies (Mayo Clinic, Duke University, University of Oxford…) have shown that suicide and other indicators of depression go down by as much as 40% around the holidays.

I can personally attest that Christmastime is a glittery little hiatus from general wintertime blues. And who could contemplate self-harm while George Bailey dances through the televised streets? So raise a glass this holiday season, to depression delayed, at least until the cruel, slow slog from January to March.

Tonight: Reigning Sound/Black Lips (Orange Peel) and Late-night at The Admiral

Last night felt great.  It was the opening night at the Admiral, and I immediately felt at ease walking through the front door finding friends who were already discussing the fact that Asheville finally has what it’s been needing.  There was a soon to be running jukebox to the right, an inviting lounge area to the left, and a bar lined with faces that have longed for a home that could be both start and finish to their evening.  On top of the Admiral being a comfortable space, the ambitious (thank you, Lance) menu tastes as nice as it sounds.  Multiple vegan offerings, like the “Vegan faux meat loaf. Tofu, brown rice, winter vegetables. Coconut milk mashed potatoes, green beans almandine” will be consumed by ME this evening prior to my little trip downtown.  Which finally brings us to this evening …The Reigning Sound and the Black Lips are going to set the OrangePeel on fire this evening.  Two bands that are already legendary across the globe.  As soon as that fire gets put out (and it will take a while) …head on back to the Admiral (400 Haywood Road …across from Harvest Records and next to BJ’s) where you can settle in for a late-night dinner/snack and enjoy the sounds that Reigning Sound’s Greg Cartwright will be spinning.  Honest, this is going to be a great evening.  Spread the word!

Bring cans and cans of food to the Menage show at the Grey Eagle tomorrow night!

Matt Kinne gets real real hungry during almost ANY Menage performance.  In all honesty, Matt may get hungry during live performances, but the cans of food are in no way for Matt’s consumption …they’re for lofting at the band.  Ok, seriously, please bring at LEAST one can of food, but do NOT throw it (The band is just too sweet!) or open it prior to the Menage show this Thursday evening.  The holidays are upon us (LOTS of ‘em), and the Grey Eagle is kind enough to participate in a canned food drive that is lasting the ENTIRE month of December!  Support an honest good cause, and check out Menage and opening act Chris Baron (remember the Spin Doctors?) at the Grey Eagle TOMORROW night (Thursday, December 6th).
